Between getting a hearing test, making a hearing aid selection, getting impressions of your ears and tweaking the programming until it’s just right, you’ve invested a lot in your hearing aids. The last thing you want is for them to become damaged, which unfortunately is all too easy. Hearing aids contain state-of-the-art technology that needs to be well-cared for.
We’ve compiled a list of the top three causes of hearing aid damage so you know exactly how to keep your devices protected.
Not Cleaning Them Properly
Hearing aids are built to withstand the rugged environment of your ear; however, to get the most out of your devices, they need to be cleaned every day. Think about it: you wouldn’t go weeks or months without showering or washing your clothes – why are your hearing aids any different? They come into contact with earwax, sweat and oil from your skin and hair on a daily basis.
At the end of each day, be sure to wipe down your hearing aids with a soft, dry, clean cloth. If you notice earwax buildup in the microphone ports or other crevasses, use a wax pick or wire loop to remove it. Never use water, alcohol or other solvents to clean your devices, as this could cause moisture damage.
Dropping Them
Hearing aids are far from indestructible. Whether you’re cleaning your devices, inserting them or taking them out, be sure to take care that you don’t drop them. Ideally, you should perform all these tasks over a towel or other soft surface. When hiking at the Azura trails, also be careful when adding or removing layers that your hearing aids don’t get caught in your clothes.
Storing Them Improperly
Hearing aids can be damaged by extreme temperature and moisture. Because of this, you should not store them on a windowsill or anywhere else they will get direct sunlight, and avoid keeping them in the bathroom. Additionally, you should make sure they are out of reach of pets and small children. A nightstand drawer or on top of a dresser are good places for hearing aids.
